The government consultation has identified eight key areas where EYFS safeguarding requirements will be strengthened. These changes aim to create more robust protection systems for children in early years settings.
Key Amendments
🛡️ Safer Recruitment
New expectations are being introduced for providers. These include requirements for obtaining references and having safeguarding policies that ensure only suitable individuals are recruited.
📅 Child Absences
Providers will have new requirements to follow up if a child is absent for a prolonged period. Additionally, they must hold extra emergency contact details for each child.
🍎 Safer Eating
There are new requirements being implemented to promote safer eating practices within early years settings.
📚 Safeguarding Training
An annex of safeguarding training criteria will be created. This will require providers to include details of how safeguarding training is delivered and how practitioners are supported to implement it.
🏥 Paediatric First Aid (PFA) Training
Early years students and trainees will be required to have Paediatric First Aid training. This training must be included in the ratios at the level of their study.
📢 Whistleblowing
New requirements are being put in place to support whistleblowing.
🔒 Children’s Privacy
Amendments will be made to ensure that children’s privacy during nappy changing and toileting is considered and balanced with safeguarding considerations.
📝 Minor Changes
A number of other minor changes will be made to the structure and wording of the safeguarding requirements to improve clarity.
